The Standard That Others Are Measured Against
Lab-Tested Every Batch
SBS conducts periodic third-party laboratory testing for Picloram, Clopyralid and other harmful contaminants. Our results: zero trace. Every time. This is not an industry standard โ it is the SBS standard.
Truly Finished Compost
SBS products undergo complete aerobic decomposition cycles and heat sterilization. Partially composted material kills plants โ SBS has never compromised on this. Our composts are finished, odorless and growth-promoting.
pH-Engineered for North Texas
Metroplex soils naturally test at pH 8.4 โ far too alkaline for most plants. Our signature pH Balanced Compost is specifically engineered to neutralize alkalinity when tilled into native soil.
Fleet Delivery Across DFW
Tandem dump trucks, 18-wheel end-dump and live bottom trailers, blower trucks โ we serve 150+ DFW cities with scheduling windows that work around your project timeline.
Precision Material Specs
Every SBS product has documented application rates, installation instructions and material specs available for landscape architects and specifiers. Samples available for testing and approval.
Expert Horticulture Support
Our in-house horticulturists are available to help with product selection, soil problem diagnosis and project specification โ a rare advantage you won't find at a commodity supplier.
Trusted by DFW's Premier Landscape Professionals
"SBS has been our exclusive soil supplier for over 15 years. Their pH Balanced Compost outperforms every other product on the market. When landscapers do work at their own homes, they buy from SBS โ that says everything."
"The consistency and quality of SBS materials is unmatched in the DFW market. We have specified SBS products on dozens of high-profile commercial and institutional installations with zero issues."
"Howard Garrett (The Dirt Doctor) has recommended SBS for years โ and for good reason. Their cotton burr-based pH Balanced Compost is the most effective soil amendment available for our alkaline North Texas soils."

Start Here: North Texas Soil 101
Dallas/Fort Worth native soil is notoriously challenging โ heavy black clay with an alkaline pH around 8.4 (neutral is 7.0). Most plants struggle because they cannot absorb nutrients efficiently in high-pH soil, not because of fertilizer deficiency.
SBS's pH Balanced Compost is specifically engineered to correct this problem when tilled into your beds. It contains a rich cotton burr base that not only lowers pH but also breaks up clay, improves drainage and adds lasting organic nutrition.
Our Gumbo Busterยฎ goes even further โ a pre-blended compost and expanded shale mix formulated at Texas A&M's prescribed ratios to permanently break up heavy clay.

pH Balanced Compostโข
Our most-recommended product. This fully-composted cotton burr-based organic material is teeming with beneficial bacteria and specially prepared to create a pH-balanced environment when tilled into native alkaline soil. pH 5.25โ6.5. Used extensively by premier DFW landscape contractors, hospitals, schools and the State Capital Grounds.
Gumbo Busterยฎ
Pre-mixed compost and expanded shale at Texas A&M / Dr. Steve George's prescribed ratios โ permanently breaks up and fortifies native Metroplex black clay soil. pH balanced, ideal for Earth-Kindโข plants. A premium solution for the DFW clay problem.
Expanded Shale
Lightweight, porous aggregate that permanently aerates and improves drainage in clay-based soils. Recommended in conjunction with pH Balanced Compostโข for maximum effect. Gray in color, gravel-like texture.
Additional Soil Amendments
Professional Compost
Fully composted organic material designed for large-scale, price-sensitive commercial jobs. Performs comparably to competitors' best products. Ideal where volume is the priority and pH correction is handled separately.
Blended Compost
Rich blend of fully composted landscape trimmings and dairy cow manure compost. Especially nutrient-rich as it sources from lactating cows. Excellent for beds requiring a high organic nutrient load.
Clay Slayer
Finished compost and expanded shale blend โ a cost-sensitive alternative to Gumbo Buster. Improves aeration and drainage in heavy clay, but does not address elevated pH.
Acid Lovers Compostโข
Specifically formulated for acid-loving plants: azaleas, camellias, magnolias, pine trees. pH 4.5โ6.0. Outstanding drainage, easy to wet, excellent moisture retention. Also usable as a very acidic, nutrient-rich mulch.
Premium Mulch
All mulch types โ fine cut, rustic, colored, cedar, playground-grade, erosion control and specialty. Bulk or bagged.
โ Most Popular
Fine Cut Hardwood Mulch
Made from hardwood with consistently smaller, interlocking particles. Creates a refined, polished appearance. Excellent moisture retention and weed suppression. The most popular mulch choice for commercial bed installations.
Cedar Mulch
Great appearance, appealing cedar aroma and known to repel insects. Uniformly stringy, rustic texture adds a natural character to bed installations. A premium choice for upscale residential and commercial properties.
Black Mulch
Dramatic black-stained hardwood mulch that creates sharp visual contrast in landscape beds. Retains its rich dark color for many months. Non-toxic colorization process safe for plants and animals. Popular in commercial and corporate settings.
Red Mulch
Vibrant red-stained hardwood mulch colorized via an industry-leading non-toxic process. Adds bold visual impact to landscape beds. Retains color well and performs all standard mulch functions.
Specialty & Commercial Mulches
Bois D'arc Mulch
Incredibly hard wood โ outlasts every other mulch type. Naturally yellow wood that permanently turns auburn red when exposed to sun, continuing to darken over time. Unlike dyed mulches, the color is permanent and natural. A premium, long-lasting investment.
Playground Cushion Chips
Engineered for maximum durability and impact attenuation. Tested and compliant with ASTM standards for playground surface impact and wheelchair accessibility. Also widely used for outdoor event surfaces (tent parties, corporate events) where long-duration standing or accessibility is required.
Construction Mulch
Coarse mixed-particle mulch for temporary driving surfaces on job sites and as a root protection layer during construction. The most economical mulch option for functional applications.
Filter Berm Compost
Pre-mixed TxDOT and TCEQ approved compost and mulch blend for erosion control berms on construction sites and roadways. Achieves vegetative growth in 30 days. Can be installed on slopes up to 45 degrees. Required on many public works projects in Texas.
Azalea Bed Fine Cut Mulch
Nicely textured mulch that lowers pH as a top dressing for azalea beds. Protects acid-loving plants, conserves moisture, inhibits weeds. Provides an aerated, professional finish.
Rustic Cut Hardwood Mulch
Made from hardwoods with a variety of particle sizes creating a rustic, natural appearance. Interlocking particles resist washing in rain events. Good aeration properties with few fines.
Landscaping Soils & Bed Mixes
Precision-engineered soil blends for new installations, bed revivals, specialty plantings and on-structure gardens. All available in bulk or bagged.

For new lawn installations, apply 3โ4 inches of Lawn Mix over native soil, grade to desired profile, then install sod directly. Do not till โ the structured soil profile is more beneficial left intact. For top dressing, apply ยผ to ยฝ inch and work into existing turf with a drag mat.

Many landscape contractors drop off trimmings in the same trip they pick up new materials โ efficient scheduling with a single facility visit.

Vegetable Gardening Guide
Everything you need to grow a productive vegetable garden in North Texas โ SBS's soil recommendations, best practices and product selection guide.
Vegetable Garden Best Practices
- 1.Start with the right soil. Vegetable plants require nutrient-rich, well-draining, neutral pH soil. Native DFW soil meets none of these requirements. Build or excavate your bed and backfill entirely with SBS's Premium Vegetable Bed Blend or Specialty Organic-Growers' Mix.
- 2.Raised beds outperform in-ground. A raised bed 12โ18 inches deep filled entirely with SBS veggie mix eliminates drainage issues, allows root penetration and provides the optimal growing environment year after year.
- 3.Mulch the surface. Apply 2โ3 inches of fine hardwood mulch between rows and around plants to retain moisture, moderate soil temperature and suppress weeds.
- 4.Top dress each season. Add 1โ2 inches of pH Balanced Compost or Revitalizerโข to your veggie beds each new growing season to restore organic matter and nutrients consumed by the previous crop.
- 5.Expect settling. High-organic soil mixes settle 15โ20% in the first year as organics decompose. Plan your bed height accordingly, and top up each spring.

Frequently Asked Questions
Expert answers to the most common questions about soils, mulches, compost and landscape materials โ from the SBS horticulture team.
- Mulch is placed on top of the soil as a protective layer for plants, moisture retention and aesthetics. It ranges from fresh organic material to well-composted organic material. Compost has been thoroughly decomposed through aerobic microbial action and is a nutrient-rich material that feeds plants and improves soil structure. Key rule: compost can be used as mulch; mulch should never be placed in the root zone as a soil amendment.
- Partially composted organic material consumes soil nutrients for its own decomposition, robs plant roots of oxygen through methane gas emissions, and releases volatile organic acids that are toxic to plants. This is why so many landscapes fail โ the compost used was not finished. SBS composts undergo complete aerobic decomposition cycles and heat sterilization. All SBS composts are "finished compost" โ growth-promoting, odorless and safe for root-zone contact.
- Metroplex native soil tests at approximately pH 8.4 โ highly alkaline. Nearly all plants prefer neutral pH (6.5โ7.5) in order to efficiently absorb nutrients. Plants in alkaline soil show nutrient deficiency symptoms (chlorosis, stunted growth) even when fertilizer is applied, because the nutrients are locked up by the chemistry of high-pH soil. SBS pH Balanced Compost is engineered specifically to lower soil pH when tilled into native DFW soil.
- Picloram is a persistent herbicide used in agriculture that survives the composting process and can contaminate compost products. Even 1 part-per-billion in water can permanently damage plants. SBS conducts periodic third-party lab tests for Picloram and Clopyralid. Results: zero (0) ppb โ every test, every time. SBS composts do not contain these contaminants. Some competitor products have tested positive โ always ask your supplier for lab results.
- Absolutely not. Despite widespread promotion, pine bark is one of the worst materials you can use. It is nearly void of nutritional content, causes severe nitrogen tie-up in the soil, releases phenols and terpenes that damage soil biology, and does not significantly aid moisture retention. SBS strongly recommends against all forms of pine bark regardless of whether it is raw, aged or "composted." For mulch, use hardwood or cedar. For soil amendment, use pH Balanced Compostโข.
- Yes โ cotton burrs are one of the best possible soil amendments. They are nearly twice as nutrient-dense as normal manures, break up clay soils, improve moisture retention in sandy soils, encourage beneficial mycorrhizal activity and do not cause nitrogen tie-up. Fully decomposed cotton burrs (as used in SBS pH Balanced Compost) are completely safe โ no chemicals, weeds or insects. This is why SBS uses cotton burrs as the base of our signature compost products.
- Measure the length, width and depth of your project area and enter the values into the SBS Cubic Yard Calculator. Material is sold by the cubic yard. For beds, a minimum 8-inch depth is recommended for most plants; 12 inches for trees, azaleas and roses. For mulch, 3 inches is the commercial standard for moisture retention and weed suppression.
- Yes โ SBS delivers throughout the extended DFW Metroplex, serving 150+ cities from Wichita Falls to Corsicana, Shreveport to Granbury. Deliveries are made MondayโSaturday during daylight hours. Orders under 6 CY incur a small-load fee. See the Delivery page for full truck specs and coverage map.
- SBS has a 50+ year track record, conducts lab testing for contaminants (zero ppb, every test), uses only fully composted materials, does not use pine bark, sawdust or treated lumber, and has formulated products specifically for DFW's alkaline clay soil conditions. SBS products are used on some of the most prominent commercial and institutional installations in Texas โ AT&T Stadium, Klyde Warren Park, George W. Bush Presidential Library and many more. When landscapers do work at their own homes, they buy from SBS. That is the ultimate endorsement.

Common Soil Problems
Diagnose why your plants are struggling โ and the SBS solution for each problem.
Chlorosis (Yellowing Leaves)
Cause: Alkaline DFW soil locks up iron and other nutrients, even when fertilized. Plants cannot absorb nutrients in high-pH conditions.
Fix: Till in SBS pH Balanced Compostโข to lower pH. For acid-loving plants, use Acid Lovers Compostโข and Azalea Mixโข.
Stunted Growth / Plant Failure
Cause: Often caused by improperly composted material in the soil that emits methane gas, starving roots of oxygen. Also caused by nitrogen tie-up from pine bark or sawdust.
Fix: Remove problem material, replace with SBS fully finished, lab-certified compost. Never use pine bark or sawdust.
Poor Drainage / Root Rot
Cause: DFW's clay-heavy soil has very low permeability. Water sits in the root zone and suffocates roots.
Fix: Till in Gumbo Busterยฎ (compost + expanded shale) to permanently open up the soil structure. For new beds, use SBS Ready-To-Plantโข โ no clay, optimal drainage.
Drought Stress / Water Loss
Cause: Sandy or organic-depleted soil cannot retain moisture. Lack of mulch allows rapid evaporation.
Fix: Amend soil with SBS Blended Compost to improve moisture retention. Apply 3โ4 inches of hardwood mulch โ SBS mulch reduces moisture loss by up to 75%.
Herbicide Contamination (Picloram / Clopyralid)
Cause: Buying compost from suppliers who use contaminated feedstocks โ particularly manures from animals that ate herbicide-treated hay.
Fix: Use only SBS products. All SBS composts are lab-tested to zero ppb for both Picloram and Clopyralid. Always ask suppliers for test results.
Weed Explosion After Installation
Cause: Using improperly composted materials that contain viable weed seeds (common in raw manures and low-quality composts).
Fix: SBS composts are heat-sterilized through the composting process, killing weed seeds. Apply 3โ4 inches of mulch as a physical weed barrier.
50+ Years of Uncompromising Quality
Soil Building Systems began in 1972 with a simple principle: produce only what works, and let the results speak for themselves. That principle has guided every decision for over five decades.
The SBS Story
Soil Building Systems began in 1972 in Dallas, Texas. Rather than rushing to market, SBS invested considerably in R&D before opening for business โ and many of the early findings were contrary to the common wisdom of the day. Over time, much of what SBS pioneered was eventually adopted as industry standard.
Over the decades, SBS witnessed countless composting companies come and go. SBS weathered every economic storm by staying true to its founding objective: produce only quality products. Conscientious landscape professionals came to realize that the performance of installed plants was entirely dependent on the quality of the surrounding soil โ and their business reputation depended on that realization.
In 1993, SBS opened its current main processing center in Dallas at 2101 Walnut Hill, allowing better service to the entire Metroplex. Since then, the company has grown steadily through word of mouth, impeccable reputation and integrity โ never through advertising.
Under the leadership of Baron Ablon, who joined in 2001, SBS has transformed into the premier commercial and institutional supplier in DFW โ providing materials for landmark projects including AT&T Stadium, Klyde Warren Park, George W. Bush Presidential Library, Cowboys World Headquarters, Perot Museum of Nature and Science, and Vitruvian Park.

Baron Ablon
Baron Ablon graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, then built a career spanning Fortune 100 corporations and entrepreneurial ventures โ accumulating executive-level expertise in manufacturing, systems development and customer service.
After twenty years in corporate America, he joined Soil Building Systems in 2001, becoming President & CEO shortly thereafter. Baron's infusion of fresh ideas and innovative management transformed SBS from a well-regarded regional supplier into an award-winning commercial powerhouse.
The transformational changes Baron implemented elevated SBS to new levels of prominence โ reflected in the company's role providing materials for the region's most prestigious projects: AT&T Stadium, Klyde Warren Park, George W.
